Charity Spotlight: This post was provided by Peggy Hills, Artistic Director at the Chamber Music Society of Mississauga as part of our ongoing charity spotlight series.
When fingers touch the ivory keys of a piano, a bow is drawn across the string of a violin, or finger nails pluck the strings of a guitar, magic happens.
At the Chamber Music Society of Mississauga (CMSM), we passionately believe in the transformative power of the performing arts, and we work to bring the power of the arts to the people of Mississauga.
The Power of Music
Music has the power to transform. Scientific studies have shown artistic engagements have positive and long-lasting impacts on children’s self-esteem. Music also stimulates the artistic brain, thus facilitating higher learning.
With this knowledge to fuel us, we work hard to advance our goal of changing young lives through artistic endeavours. The CMSM believes passionately in the transformative power of the performing arts as we know its capacity to positively affect the development and well-being of all citizens in our community, especially our young people.
Our Impact
The CMSM is committed to researching and developing relevant programs to engage the creative minds of our youngest generations. As the only professional arts organization in our community working to accomplish this mission, our team of professional musicians, composers, actors, astronomers and videographers contribute their talents to bring our ideas to life.
Programming for young audiences is one of the CMSM’s missions. We strive to create and deliver accessible programs that are relevant to our community and that will engage young and new audiences (many of them new Canadians and those living on limited financial resources). With funding support we are able to present these programs and keep the admission cost very low. Priced affordably, we are able to reach and inspire all audiences across the City of Mississauga and surrounding communities.
Premièring in 2016, Our Night Sky, a new multi-media and multi-cultural show featuring enriching stories and music from Indian, Chinese, African, Arabic, and First Nations peoples composed by Mississauga’s very own musical mastermind, Dr. Michael Coghlan. Dr. Coghlan’s diverse musical talents perfectly compliment the show’s narrative, and further enhances the resounding voices of the Mississauga Children’s Choir – it is truly a sight to be seen.
As we continue to make music in Mississauga, our mission is to motivate our youngest, eldest, newest, and oldest residents to appreciate and enjoy the sounds of music emanating across the municipality from CMSM. We hope to inspire Mississauga’s next generation of audiences and musicians to appreciate the power of music for generations to come.
